From brain drain… to brain gain. Marco Veremis discusses with Niki Kerameus, Minister of Labor and Social Security, and Afroditi Xydi, co-founder and Executive Director of the Deon Policy Institute, about a Greece that is beginning to return. They map the dynamics of a “Greece outside Greece”, with millions of Greeks abroad and a particularly strong presence in the global academic and research community. In this context, the Deon Policy Institute has registered over 3,500 Greek academics at leading universities worldwide and has collected approximately 500 responses on the conditions for their return. They highlight, through data and examples, the importance of connecting Greece to the international ecosystem of knowledge and innovation with the use of tools such as special visas for highly skilled talent, as well as the value of “technological diplomacy” as a lever for strengthening ties between Greek businesses and global research. They discuss the policies and incentives needed for scientists with high skills and international experience to connect meaningfully with the country — either through return or through active collaboration. |
