Yiannis Martinos, Signal Group: Digital transformation, Greek shipping industry’s biggest bet

Signal Group founder and CEO Yiannis Martinos talks about his upbringing in a family with deep roots in shipping. His university studies and family business allowed him to envision shipping outside the traditional norms. Using applied robotics and digital technologies, Signal Group upends standard practices and fully digitizes onboard ship navigation and on-shore support functions.

In his interview with Marcos Veremis, he discusses the technological future of shipping and AI's role in it. He also touches upon how AI is set to revolutionize our daily lives and challenge the lives of our children.

Genesis Ventures invested an undisclosed amount of money in Finloup. Finloup, a fintech company with a buy-now-pay-later service proposition, will use the investment to increase merchant onboarding and consumer awareness. Raising awareness and improving onboarding rates is a major priority for Finloup which aims to partner up with leading digital agencies and software houses in Greece, by the end of 2022.

British online supermarket and technology group, Ocado, has agreed to buy materials handling robotics start-up Myrmex.Inc, for $10.2 million. Ocado has previously acquired a minority stake in Athens-based company, Myrmex, and tasked it with developing a system that automates the loading of containers with customer orders onto frames ready for dispatch from Ocado's warehouses.

In a record investment for the Greek ecosystem, the car-as-a-service startup, FlexCar, announced that it raised €210 million. The capital was led by London-based Fasanara Capital, with VentureFriends, Uni.Fund, Frontline Ventures, Seaya Ventures, and Arena Investors also participating in the round. The company plans to use the funds to expand to two more continents in the next year.

Feel Therapeutics raises $ 4 million from Genesis Ventures, with existing investors Felicis, Anthemis, SOSV, and business angels. Feel aims at developing biomarkers and digital tools and methods to help in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of mental health.

TileDB, Inc. has received a strategic investment from Verizon Ventures, joining recent investments from Lockheed Martin Ventures, AMGEN Ventures, and NTT Docomo Ventures. The funding will be used to accelerate the development of advanced features of the TileDB universal database and to scale go-to-market functions.

Bryq raises $4 million in their pre-series A funding round, provided by Dutch fund No Such Ventures and Greek fund Big Pi Ventures. Bryq is a talent intelligence platform that was created to eliminate hiring biases, time constraints, and inefficient decisions that result from the traditional workforce management process.

Matternet secures an investment from the 5G Ventures S.A. Phaistos Investment Fund, for their Series B financing round. With this investment, Matternet will establish a subsidiary in Greece where they will develop research and development activities as well as be in charge of Matternet Europe, managing the European Operations.

Deutsche Telekom is transferring its software development center from St. Petersburg to Thessaloniki. According to sources, other candidate countries included Croatia, Slovenia, and India.
